COMMUNITY groups have been invited to make use of a conference room at Stockton Fire Station that opened this week.

The meeting room at the station, in South Road, Norton, is available to community and focus groups free of charge.

Other organisations will be asked to pay a nominal fee in a scheme designed to build strong links with local communities.

Staff at the fire station welcome the first users of the conference room today.

A local partnership group will get round the conference table, have access to two computers, installed as part of the national Learn Direct project, and make use of refreshment facilities.

Mike Picknett, Stockton district manager at Cleveland Fire Brigade, said: "We are opening doors, literally, to work with others to build a safer environment.

"We hope that by encouraging greater use of the facilities available at Stockton Fire Station, which belongs to the community it serves, we can develop partnerships which help us in our aim of protecting local communities."
