ABOUT 50 older people from East Durham are the first in the county to receive new shopping bags, which could save their lives this winter.
The bags, made from reflective white nylon, can be picked up by car headlights and therefore make it more likely older pedestrians can be seen on dark nights.
Durham County Council has teamed up with Age Concern to distribute some of the bags to residents next week.
Alan Kennedy, the council's road safety officer, said: "Bags are light, easy to fold up into a pocket when not in use and are a simple but effective way of making yourself visible."
The first bags will be handed out at an Age Concern event in Yuill House, Thornley, near Peterlee, on Thursday.
