CHINESE lions roamed the North yesterday during an impressive performance by a Kung Fu expert and his students.
Used to ward off evil spirits at the start of the Chinese New Year, which is on February 9 this year, the lions took to the streets of Guisborough, east Cleveland.
Instructor Robin Sunley put on a performance of Kung Fu techniques as a concrete block was broken across his body with a sledgehammer.
He is teaching students the Chinese art of Lau Gar Kung Fu, to control internal body energy.
He said: "During the classes we use internal energy techniques such as Qi and learn breathing skills known as Qi Gung.
"They all help in self-defence and it is great for female students who do not want to rely on strength during self-defence.
"The skills we learn help with fitness and also flexibility of the body, and people with no skill at all can join us."
The impressive lions are believed to bring good luck.
It takes two fit individuals to perform the acrobatics, which take place while drums are sounded.
Kung Fu classes for children, beginners and advanced students take place weekly at Guisborough scout hut.
