A THIRD company has entered the race to run Durham City's first commercial radio station.
The two firms that have run trial broadcasts over the past two years, Durham FM and Durham Local Radio, have already lodged applications.
Durham 2Day FM was the third bid lodged with communications regulator Ofcom by Thursday evening's deadline.
The firm, as Blackburn 2Day FM, bid unsuccessfully for the licence to operate in the Lancashire town.
Durham FM is run by the firm behind Sun FM, in Sunderland, and Alpha FM, in Darlington.
Durham Local Radio, which proposes to call its station Prince FM, is a consortium which includes Newsquest North-East, publishers of The Northern Echo and the Advertiser series newspapers.
An Ofcom spokeswoman said it would take up to four months for bids to be assessed and its licensing committee to award the 12-year licence.
Members of the public can view the proposals on Ofcom's website www.ofcom.org.uk
