PROPOSALS for a new community hospital have taken a step forward with the formal submission of the details for planning approval.
The Durham Dales Primary Care Trust has lodged a blueprint for the £6.5m project in Barnard Castle with Teesdale District Council.
The scheme was given a warm welcome by many residents when the plans were put on public display last year.
The aim is to demolish a health centre and mortuary close to the Richardson Hospital in John Street and construct the hospital on the site.
Andrew Bishop, a council planning officer, said yesterday that the formal plans to be considered are similar to those already seen by the public apart from a few minor amendments.
He said:"It is now a case of waiting and seeing what comments are made by the public, and they will be taken into account when the plans are considered."
There are hopes that a start will be made on the project this year, with the aim of improving facilities for in-patients and others requiring out-patient treatment.
