A CYCLIST has been banned from three villages after he harassed women in the street.

Michael Remmer, 36, was given an anti-social behaviour order after complaints of him acting inappropriately towards women in Boldon, Whitburn and Cleadon, on South Tyneside.

Police said Remmer would cycle around the villages and approach women in the street.

Inspector Peter Sutton said: "Although this man would often say nothing, it was more the way he approached the women which caused concern. On one occasion, he is understood to have asked a woman if she had a boyfriend, but his comments were always of a very low-level nature.

"He would ask these people if they would like to go out with him, that kind of thing."

The order, which will be in place for two years, was given by South Tyneside magistrates after Remmer's conviction on four charges of harassment.

He was also ordered to pay £80 costs and was given an 18-month community rehabilitation order. He is prevented from visiting Boldon, Whitburn and Cleadon.

He is also banned from approaching any female and using threatening, abusive, insulting and disorderly behaviour.

Remmer is understood to have cycled to South Tyne-side from his Sunderland home.
