SCHOOLS in the North-East are being encouraged to apply for grants to upgrade their grounds.
EDF Energy, based at Doxford International Business Park, Sunderland, is offering grants of up to £5,000.
The awards scheme, now in its fourth year, will focus on initiatives that promote active and healthy lifestyles for children and is open to maintained schools in Sunderland, South Tyneside, County Durham and Gateshead.
Schools are invited to outline their proposed improvements, which will be judged on creativity, community involvement and how they engage children in adopting more active lifestyles.
The winning school will receive £5,000, four highly commended schools will win £1,000 and two commended schools will receive £750.
Elizabeth Metcalfe, community affairs manager for EDF, said: "Well-planned school grounds and stimulating outdoor learning facilities are extremely important for the development of children and this year we will be looking to help those schools that want to enhance their outdoor areas."
Last year's overall winner was Hylton Castle Primary School, Sunderland.
Application forms and brochures are available on 0191-512 5491.
