A NEW spate of vandalism has hit Masham, near Ripon, with youths from outside the town being blamed.

The incidents came after a group of local youngsters publicly apologised for their behaviour, which sparked a packed public meeting in the town.

In the latest incidents, vandals wrecked a seat in the Market Place, damaged disabled parking signs, smashed fencing and removed gates.

Masham Parish Council's latest meeting heard details of the incidents, which have been reported to North Yorkshire Police. The parish council has also decided to monitor the situation.

Following earlier incidents, thought to be unrelated, some local youths promised community police officer Gareth Jones that they would put a stop to their behaviour.

After the public meeting at Masham Town Hall, attended by more than 100 people, a number of youths agreed to make amends by raising money for the town - particularly for elderly people who had been victims of the youngsters' actions.

Details of the fundraising efforts are still to be announced.
