STUDENTS quizzed the man in charge of their educational needs yesterday.

Kim Howells, Minister for Higher Education and Skills, is touring the North-East, visiting colleges to find out what students think the Government is offering them.

He called at the University of Teesside yesterday before visiting Prior Pursglove College, Guisborough, this morning.

Professor Graham Henderson, the vice-chancellor of the University of Teesside, said: "Kim Howells has expressed particular interest in our strategy to widen participation and will be meeting senior managers from within the university directly involved with this work.

"The principals of Darlington College and Middlesbrough College joined us in a round table discussion about the future direction of Government policy towards higher education.

"He also toured the campus and met the executive of the Students' Union."

Today, the minister is visiting Prior Pursglove College, where he will tour the recently-completed £3.5m refurbishments.

The college's principal, Stephen Whitehead, said: "Sixth Form Colleges provide a unique opportunity for young people to grow and develop in an adult but supportive environment, preparing them for employment whether directly into work or through university.
