WORK has been completed on a £20m investment at Wilton Power Station, on Teesside.

The project to improve the efficiency of the plant by building an extra gas turbine will help safeguard 160 jobs.

SembCorp Utilities UK, which took the power station over in April 2003, pledged at the time to make it more efficient.

The project has been delivered on time and to budget at the station, which supplies steam and electricity.

About 85 jobs were created during the construction phase and the gas turbine began generating its first electricity a year after work started.

SembCorp commissioned AK Engineering Services to design and build part of the project.

Phil Morland, SembCorp's UK projects manager, said: "Our company has been working on this project for over three years, during which time we have encountered a change in ownership, changes in legislation and many other unexpected challenges.

"SembCorp Utilities UK has delivered this project to our parent company and it is an important demonstration of our capability to grow SembCorp's business in the UK and further afield.

"We are looking forward to a bright future with confidence and optimism."
