COUNCILLORS have approved plans for a zebra crossing on a busy road.
The crossing, at Marshall Terrace in Sunderland Road, Gilesgate, Durham, was requested by Belmont Parish Council. A petition in support of the crossing was signed by 102 customers of a local store.
Durham County Council's highways committee was told the crossing would improve pedestrian safety, particularly for nearby elderly residents and pupils at local schools.
It also heard some businesses were worried that the crossing would take up parking space.
The crossing will be funded by the parish council and from local councillor Barbara Howarth's local member's allowance, but the county council will be responsible for its maintenance.
