HUNDREDS of photographs have been loaded on to a CD to show the highs and lows of a town's history.

Shildon - Our Town was compiled by the Shildon Recall Society to show the changes in the railway town over the years.

It records some of the most important events in the history of the town, including the Shildon Wagon Works, Timothy Hackworth and the Zeppelin bombing of nearby Eldon.

The project is the result of six months work. Society members selected photographs from the society's archive, retouched or repaired them as necessary, and created a slide show, which the viewer controls.

The CD has been so popular that it has sold out twice.

Society member Alan Ellwood said: "When it first came out we ran out of copies in three days. It has been very popular. People have sent it to places like Canada and Australia.

"We are now hoping to get some professional help to make a DVD and are also hoping to eventually print a book."

Money raised from the sale of the CD will go towards new equipment for the society, including a negative scanner so the society can collect and store more historic events.

Anyone who wants a copy of the disc, priced at £5.99, or who can help the society create a DVD can call Mr Ellwood on (01388) 776091.
