CAMPAIGNERS are calling for more and better cycle paths in Darlington.
Darlington Cycle Campaign wants Darlington Borough Council to improve cycle paths as part of its Town on the Move initiative, which is aimed at promoting environmentally-friendly transport.
Campaign chairman Richard Grassick said: "We are not against motorists but we would like to see priority given to cyclists and pedestrians on minor roads.
"They should have right of way but are being forced to stop and wait at junctions because cars are bigger and stronger."
A council spokesman said the authority was committed to improving road safety and was looking for suitable areas where junctions giving rights of way to cyclists could an be introduced.
He said: "We are trying to create a town which allows cyclists and pedestrians to come together safely and harmoniously."
More parking for bikes will be installed and there are plans for new cycle routes in Cemetery Lane, Desmond Way, off Honeypot Lane, and on the Red Hall estate.
Darlington Cycle Campaign is holding a public meeting at the Red Lion pub, Priestgate, on Tuesday, at 7pm.
