NEWCASTLE have missed out on one of their leading transfer targets after Luis Boa Morte signed a three-year contract extension at Fulham, writes Scott Wilson.
United boss Graeme Souness confirmed his interest in the Portuguese international earlier this month and preliminary talks had been held with the player's agent.
There had even been talk of a possible swap deal involving French full-back Olivier Bernard but, after hurriedly opening contract talks of his own, Fulham boss Chris Coleman has been able to convince Boa Morte that his future lies at Craven Cottage.
"I am delighted that after lengthy negotiations, Luis has signed an extension to his contract," said Coleman.
"I have made no secret of Boa's importance to the squad and obviously after the speculation that has surrounded the last few weeks I am even more happy that we have finally managed to put pen to paper."
Boa Morte moved to the Premiership in 1997 joining Arsenal from Sporting Lisbon for £1.75m.
He switched to Southampton for £500,000 in 1999, before moving to Fulham a year later.
"I have been at Fulham for a number of years now and I enjoy my football here," said Boa Morte. "I'm happy we have reached an agreement to stay here."
