A SPECIALIST in destination marketing has been appointed chief executive of the Newcastle-Gateshead Initiative (NGI), it was announced yesterday.
Tim Bartlett, who was born on Tyneside, takes up his post in April.
A graduate of Oxford University, Mr Bartlett has more than 30 years' experience and an in-depth knowledge of the tourism and leisure industry.
He said: "It is a privilege to be given the opportunity to join such a confident, enthusiastic and successful organisation.
"I shall greatly enjoy working with the NGI team to raise the cultural and tourism profile of Newcastle-Gateshead still further."
Mr Bartlett has held a number of high-level posts with Britain's National Tourist Boards, both in the UK and abroad.
He was chief executive of the English Tourist Board from 1995 to 1999, and then became chief executive of the British Association of Leisure Parks, Piers and Attractions.
He is currently the director of TRI Hospitality Consulting, in Madrid, with responsibility for Spain, Portugal and Latin America.
Reporting to the chairman of the board, Mr Bartlett will lead the development and management of NGI as a highly effective organisation, developing and promoting Newcastle-Gateshead as a world class cultural, leisure and conference visitor destination.
He will also play a lead role in the creation, delivery and co-ordination of cultural projects with key partners in the public and private sectors.
