THE campaign to save a learner swimming pool in Hartlepool has received support from an MP and a leading councillor.
A decision to close Rossmere Learner Pool was made by mayor Stuart Drummond, who was told by safety inspectors it would cost £450,000 to repair.
But now Labour Councillor Michael Johnson has promised to fight the decision and has enlisted MP Iain Wright to the cause.
Hartlepool Swimming Club, which uses the pool to teach youngsters to swim, accepts money needs to be spent but disputes the cost. Members also stressed the importance of youngsters being able to swim in Hartlepool, a seaside town.
Coun Johnson said: "I am yet to be convinced that this facility must be closed with immediate effect."
He went on to query the decision and the cost or repairs, and said the mayor made his decision without consulting the cabinet, and said those involved with the pool were not properly informed. He also said that the Hartlepool Borough Council safety report does not say that recommended works constitute a safety risk worthy of immediate closure.
Coun Johnson has received a letter from Iain Wright MP which said: "I have had a meeting with the mayor and I said I was not prepared to have the pool demolished now only to have a vague promise to have a new facility in several years' time."
Mayor Stuart Drummond said the council had been shocked at the state of disrepair and that £450,000 was simply not available.
He said the council's swimming programme for children would be maintained at other pools.
