A PROJECT is hoping to encourage more young people to be healthy.
Cafe Life was launched by Durham County Council's trading standards unit after a successful trial at Greenfield School Community and Arts College, in Newton Aycliffe.
Businesses and health professionals worked with trading standards to provide health information in a fun and interactive way, covering issues such as diet, exotic fruit and vegetables, safe hand-washing and how to make fruit smoothies as an alternative to sugary drinks.
"Young people and teachers were very enthusiastic and gave the event a definite thumbs-up," said Philip Holman, head of trading standards. "On the day, 160 students took part and feedback shows they really enjoyed all the activities.
"We are now looking to team up with other schools in the county to develop event days with business partners."
Councillor Don Ross, deputy leader of the county council, said: "There are few things in life as important to us as the health and fitness of our young people.
"It is good that new initiatives such as this are being developed by local partners to address this issue."
