YOUNGSTERS at a North Yorkshire school practised staying silent yesterday as they prepared for a national charity effort.

The 38 pupils at East Cowton Primary School, near Northallerton, will be among those taking part in the Big Hush in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief on January 28.

They have been rehearsing to see just how long they can button their lips.

On the day, depending on age, they will be trying to stay silent for up to 30 minutes - and the longer they manage, the more money they will raise.

Money raised by children taking part in the Big Hush will help fund specialist Macmillan nurses and doctors and build vitally important cancer care centres.

It will also give financial help to those who need it most and provide a range of cancer information both locally and nationally.
