A SCHOOL is celebrating after turning around its fortunes to receive top marks from Government inspectors.
A team from Ofsted found huge improvements at Woodhouse Close Junior School, in Bishop Auckland, which, it said, gave pupils a very good all-round education.
Four years ago, the school was placed in special measures by Ofsted, but the sanction was removed at later inspection in November 2002.
Inspectors said pupils were becoming high achievers thanks largely to the efforts of headteacher Anne Collingwood, very good teaching and the very good care and emotional support thatgives pupils the confidence to believe in themselves and achieve success.
They found very good teaching in every class, good management and good support from governors.
The report said: "Pupils think the world of the school and their teachers. Seventy per cent come in an hour early to attend the breakfast club and every pupil attends an extra-curricular club."
Mrs Collingwood said: "We are all absolutely thrilled. It is a tremendous accolade for the community here. They are all justifiably proud of their school.
"Parents come in to help with reading and take part in learning activities themselves.
"It is a very happy school and a lovely working atmosphere."
Chairman of governors Sam Zair said: "This report is excellent, morale is high. It is not just good for the school but for the whole community of Woodhouse Close.
"Anne coming in has breathed new life into the school. There is good all-round management and commitment from staff, governors and parents. That is reflected in the quality of teaching, children's achievements and the atmosphere.
"Children like to come to school and they have good self esteem and want to stay around to enjoy after-school clubs."
