A TAILOR synonymous with well-dressed English gentlemen for two centuries is opening a branch in the region.

Crombie, of Leeds, is opening a store in Eldon Gardens, Newcastle, next month.

The business, founded in 1805, is best-known for men's woollen topcoats. It supplied US Confederate officers with grey overcoats during the American Civil War and was the favourite coat-maker of the Russian Tsars.

Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev wore one on his first visit to Britain in 1984.

The Newcastle store will stock its full range of wear for men and women.

It is one of 15 branches Crombie is planning to open in city centres and airports.
