YOUNG actors rose to the challenge of a Theatre Sports contest, impressing the judges in the pilot for what could become a national event.
Edward Cole, Joseph Robson, Tom Burton, Mick Gent and Jay Smith, from south Durham theatre groups Jackass and The Terrors, beat off competition from youth theatres in Newcastle, North Tyneside and Washington.
They had to improvise scenes and sketches without scripts and respond to suggestions from the audience.
Ian McLaughlin acted as referee and judges awarded marks.
Jackass is starting a weekly drama club at Wolsingham School and Community College, in Weardale.
It is open for youngsters aged 11 and over on Tuesdays from 6.30 to 8.30pm.
Sessions are led by Julie Ward, from Jack Drum Arts, and Suzy Galbraith, from Jack in the Box. The cost is £1.50.
Funded by Wear Valley Arts and Durham Local Education Authority, classes will include drama games, improvisation, role play, developing skills and group work. A public performance could take place in the summer term.
