THE first Pacific islander to visit Britain is at the centre of an exhibition at the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum, Middlesbrough.
The exhibition details how islander Omai travelled to England in the 1770s on Captain Cook's second voyage, and how he was received when he arrived.
It details how he met Lord Sandwich, the first Lord of the Admiralty, reviewed the fleet and visited HMS Victory.
Omai also became the toast of society after he met King George III and Queen Charlotte at Kew, before he travelled north to York, Scarborough and Kirk-leatham, Redcar.
The exhibition draws on artefacts from across the country and items recently acquired by the museum.
Museum staff have also produced a lunchtime lecture series that will be held every Friday at 1pm in the Endeavour Room, from January 28 until March 18, and on April 1 and 8.
The exhibition will be held until April 10 and the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 9am to 4pm.
