RESIDENTS of Darlington who are missing out on tens of thousands of pounds worth of benefits are being urged to claim what they are entitled to.
Borough council officials are contacting 12,000 people who may be missing out on help with council tax, rent or other tax credits.
The authority is also offering to visit residents who want to find out more information about benefits entitlement.
Information on the matter will also be included in council tax statements, issued in March.
Council leader John Williams said: "At the moment, many people in Darlington are unaware that they can claim a whole variety of benefits."
Darlington MP Alan Milburn said: "It's wrong that people miss out on what they are entitled to.
"These benefits are a welcome boost for hard-working families and pensioners in Darlington, and this is a great campaign to help those who need it most."
