A FIREFIGHTER paralysed from the chest down in a horrific cycling accident has been honoured by the fire service.
Peter Hoare collided with a broken-down bus as he cycled between Northallerton and Leeming Bar in May 2002.
The accident left him paralysed from the chest down and forced him to retire from the fire service.
He had been a part-time firefighter at Northallerton for 20 years and a full-time member of the fire section at Leeming for 14 years.
He was among ten long-standing officers from Scarborough, Northallerton, Whitby, Selby and Malton who lined up to receive medals for good conduct at the firefighter's training centre in Easingwold recently.
Deputy Chief Officer Nigel Hutchinson, who also received a long-service award, gave Mr Hoare a special certificate and spoke of his amazing strength.
