SPOOKED residents called police after spotting a suspicious presence at a disused military installation.
Officers were drafted in when strange lights and shadows were spotted at the Heugh Gun Battery, at Hartlepool.
But when police arrived at the First World War building, all ghostly goings on were unveiled.
A camera crew held their hands up and confessed to hunting for spooks.
Cleveland Police received calls from residents close to the site at the town's Headland on Sunday night.
A Police spokeswoman said: "Several people with torches could be seen and two cars were parked outside.
"However, all was well upon police arrival when it was discovered filming was taking place for TV's Most Haunted programme."
The Living TV company personnel were scouring tunnels, accessed from the building, which is currently being renovated.
The Heugh Gun Battery played a significant role during the bombardment of Hartlepool, in 1914, in protecting the Headland from the German fleet.
But since being decommissioned in 1956, the battery fell into disrepair.
Local historian Steve Robins said: "There is a wealth of interesting myths and legends associated with the Headland.
"There are many reports of ghosts being seen and heard, so this would have been a great site for filming.
"But I bet the film crew weren't expecting a police presence."
