TRANSPORT chiefs are to debate plans for upgrading a North-East bypass.
Consultants have completed a major study of the A66 around Darlington that looks at upgrading a stretch of the trunk road and have put proposals out for public consultation.
In May 2003, the North-East Assembly commissioned consultants WSP/Carl Bro to undertake a study of the A66, between Blackwell Bridge and Great Burdon roundabout.
The road carries more than 20,000 vehicles a day, but that figure is expected to rise to up to 41,000 by 2025.
Proposals include dualling the A66 between the A67 Yarm Road junction and to the east of the Great Burdon roundabout.
There would also be improvements to all other junctions to the south of Darlington, and a park-and-ride scheme at Morton Park.
The Highways Agency says the £52m scheme is vital to assist major developments taking place across the town.
Darlington Transport Forum will consider the plans when it meets on Monday.
John Buxton, the borough's development director, said: "The preferred scheme could be a step towards full dualling at a later date."
