STUDENTS at a Darlington school are supporting a national campaign to raise awareness of world poverty.

The 11 to 18-year-olds from Carmel RC Technology College, in Darlington, are wearing white wristbands to back the MakePovertyHistory appeal, a joint venture between 100 charities, trade unions, faith groups and celebrities.

Religious education teacher David Bayne said: "We launched our own project this week by showing the students the campaign's website and there have been many requests for white bands since.

"The college originally ordered 30 bands and in just 24 hours we had requests for over 100 more."

The group is planning a trip to Edinburgh in July to take part in the national MakePovertyHistory demonstration. The visit coincides with the G8 Summit being held in Scotland, where poverty in Africa will be the main topic of discussion.

Student Kathryn Thurloway, 15, said: "We have a very privileged life and others deserve the same opportunities.

"If we make a big enough impression, they will take notice at the G8 Summit meeting and we will be making a difference."
