North Riding County Cup

Quarter-Finals

Richmond Mavericks 4

Grangetown BC 3

RICHMOND Mavericks conjured three goals in the last ten minutes to earn a place in the North Riding County Cup semi-finals with an amazing fightback against Grangetown Boys Club last Saturday.

The home side were on top in the first half. They hit the bar and rattled the post, but failed to get on the scoresheet and were made to pay right on the stroke of half-time when Darren Morrison put the visitors ahead.

Millard fired home a low shot to put Grangetown further ahead in the 71st minute, but Mavericks pulled one back three minutes later when Craig Lovell headed home from a corner.

The Boys Club made it 3-1 with ten minutes remaining when Morrison chipped the keeper, but Lovell reduced the deficit with his second of the match in the 82nd minute and Mark Fleetwood equalised in the 87th minute.

The game looked to be heading into extra time when Johnny Sinclair shot home to secure a dramatic Mavericks victory and a place in the semi-finals at home to Carlin How.

Carlin How 2 Richmond Town 1

Despite the loss of their player/manager and the league's top goalscorer, Wayne Gredziak, who resigned just 36 hours before this important match to join another club outside the league, Richmond made the livelier start.

After Dave Jenkinson went close and Carlin How keeper Craig Cole had made a good save, it was no surprise when the visitors took the lead in the 12th minute when Adam Emson turned his defender and shot into the bottom right-hand corner.

But the home side got back into the game, with Jason Draper going close, and they equalised in the 27th minute when a cross from Martin Say eluded the Richmond defenders and Draper was on hand to tap home.

The second half was scrappy with few chances created, but Richmond hit the bar before Carlin How grabbed the winner with ten minutes remaining. A Draper run was ended in the visitors' penalty box when Lee Wasden was adjudged to have fouled him and Graham Solomon kept his cool to score from the spot.

Fishburn Park 3 Thornaby YC 2

Fishburn drew first blood in the 25th minute through Duncan Marson and a Dean Ward shot took a wicked deflection to make it 2-0 five minutes later.

The visitors pulled one back in the 65th minute when Marty Moore scored from the penalty spot and Chris Wrathmall equalised with a tremendous right-foot shot, but Scott Clarkson grabbed the winner for the home side with three minutes left.

BEADS FC 5 Sport Catterick 1

The home side took a 4-0 half-time lead with goals from Mickey Johnson and Lee Bowes and a Darren Fixter brace.

Bowes made it 5-0 in the 70th minute before Sport Catterick scored a late consolation with five minutes remaining.

Division One

Bedale FC 3 Thornaby Ath 4

Bedale FC suffered a narrow defeat in an entertaining relegation tussle with Thornaby Athletic.

The home side are languishing in second bottom place, while the visitors, promoted last season as Teesside Link, have struggled to cope with the step up.

Paul Tate gave Bedale a fifth-minute lead, but Michael Arif brought the teams back on level terms in the 20th minute and then put the visitors ahead with a goal in the 34th minute.

Tate's second of the match and seventh of the season made it 2-2 ten minutes into the second half, but Arif completed his hat-trick in the 63rd minute to restore his side's lead.

Arif then scored his fourth of the match and tenth of the season to give Athletic a 4-2 lead, but Bedale fought back and Peter Matyus reduced the deficit in the 88th minute.

Dormans FC 2 Billingham W 2

Dormans took the lead in the 17th minute through Colin Illey, but they were reduced to ten men when Lee Doughty was sent off in the 33rd minute.

Billingham Wanderers were back on level terms five minutes later through Dave Phillips and they went ahead five minutes into the second half through Richard Walker. But Illey struck again with ten minutes remaining to rescue a point for the home side.

Nunthorpe Ath 0 Hartlepool FC 1

Hartlepool knew three points would take them top of the league with all the other leading clubs on cup duty and they did so thanks to a Glen Watson goal in the 56th minute.

Stokesley SC 0 Thornaby FC 4

Stokesley Sports Club, who look doomed to relegation after this latest defeat, went behind in the 15th minute when Neil Preston headed home from a corner.

Preston then doubled Thornaby's lead five minutes later when a mistake by the Stokesley keeper allowed his cross to drop into the net.

Stokesley started brightly in the second half and Tony Sivills had a good free kick well saved by the visitors' keeper, but they fell further behind in the 63rd minute when Gary Wyatt beat the keeper and a defender to head home. Danny Dinsdale's first goal of the season made it 4-0 with six minutes remaining.
