TWO brothers have offered to buy cherry trees in memory of their late parents to help replace 28 trees destroyed by vandals.
John and Robert Marshall have made the offer to Harrogate Borough Council, which has been forced to pay out £3,000 to buy new trees. They are expected to arrive next week.
The trees, damaged on January 16, were part of Harrogate's famous Cherry Tree Walk across the Stray. They had been planted only four weeks earlier as replacements for diseased trees.
Two businessmen who offered a £1,500 reward to catch the culprits have said the money can help pay for the replacements if those responsible are not caught.
John Marshall, who works for the council, said his parents, Vera and Cyril, particularly loved Cherry Tree Walk.
"We know that had mum still been alive she would have made a donation towards the replacement cherry trees, so we are doing it in her memory," he said.
"These vandals should learn how much hurt they have caused for a lot of people."
