HEALTH chiefs in Derwentside have adopted a fresh approach to dealing with the threat of the MRSA superbug.
Derwentside Primary Care Trust is seeking to minimise the risk of spreading the infection to other patients and health care workers.
A report from County Durham and Darlington Control and Infection Team said patients who are infected with MRSA should not be stopped from going to see their GP.
But it gives advice to staff on the best way to contain the spread of the infection.
Healthcare workers, for example, are advised to use alcohol gel as a disinfectant after contact with patients.
It is planned that one worker will explain the hygiene procedures to patients, as well as offering a leaflet.
An infection control nurse will also be available to answer questions.
