A RESTORED medieval town house is creating a gallery and schoolroom.
Barley Hall in York dates back to the late Middle Ages, when it was home to goldsmith and lord mayor of the city, William Snawsell. York Archaeological Trust acquired the site in the late 1980s and the building has since been restored to 15th Century conditions.
Last autumn, it gave visitors the chance to enjoy Tudor toys, medieval costumes and calligraphy.
Yesterday it extended its range of activities with the launch of its Handy History Gallery and School Room.
The project has been funded by a £50,000 grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and allows visitors to explore archaeology and to try their hand at medieval maths in a dedicated family area.
Activities on offer this weekend include mask and candle making. Museum manager, Gill Page said: "Barely Hall recreates a family home from the end of the Middle Ages and it's great to see today's families enjoying themselves here 500 years on."
