A TOWN'S rival breweries have backed a beer barrel race for youngsters who are trying to make amends for anti-social behaviour.
The sponsored race around Masham Market Place was organised after residents packed a public meeting to unite in protest at the behaviour of some local youngsters.
Graham Howard-Barker, who owns the Bank Villa Guest House, suggested to police community constable Gareth Jones that youngsters could come together in a fund-raising effort to benefit the town.
Those taking part in the barrel push have been blamed for vandalism and anti-social behaviour, but have since publicly apologised for their actions.
The race around the Market Place will take place on Saturday, March 19, at lunchtime.
The barrels, rolled in the name of Masham's Theakston and Black Sheep Breweries, will be filled with 36 gallons of water.
The youngsters are collecting sponsorship from families and friends, and money raised will go to residents at Maple Creek homes for the elderly.
The home was recently targeted by youngsters who switched off the electricity supply.
Police constable Jones said: "The idea of the event is to have something which will make the competitors sweat, but at the same time raise money from sponsorship for their efforts."
Teams will operate in relays racing with the barrels, with two members of each team pushing the barrels at any one time.
