A MAN was attacked in his bed by an intruder who burst into his house with a hammer.
John Clarke, 58, was beaten around the head when the man entered his Carley Road home in Southwick, Sunderland.
His 54-year-old wife, Barbara, called the police and paramedics, who took him to Sunderland Royal Hospital with head injuries after the attack at 1am yesterday.
Mr Clarke has had staples and stitches in his head. He was in a stable condition in hospital yesterday.
It is believed he was attacked with a rubber mallet.
A 23-year-old man was arrested in the early hours of yesterday and is helping police with their inquiries.
