RESIDENTS are hopeful that a study showing how their village could be supplied using only renewable sources could be turned into reality.

The study, by research staff from Northumbria University, went on show to residents of Cockfield, in Teesdale, over the weekend so people could give their views.

Villagers were shown computerised images of how homes could look if they were fitted with solar panels to trap energy from the sun to create heat and electricity.

Methods of harnessing wind power were also featured in the virtual vision.

Pauline Charlton, clerk to the parish council and a Cockfield district councillor, said: "There was a good attendance and it was all very interesting and pitched at the right level.

"People were very positive and there were quite a few questions asked.

"We are pleased that Cockfield has been chosen as the focus of this study and the parish council is looking at the plans as a real possibility."

If the plans were to be taken any further, it is hoped that funding could come from the Endeavour Housing Association, which is to take over control of council housing in the village.
