A SCHEME has been launched to encourage people to take up the challenge of fostering teenagers.
Durham County Council is promoting the teenage placement scheme as an alternative to residential care.
Elaine Robinson, the council's fostering and adoption service manager, said: "We are looking for people with stamina and determination from all areas of the county so that young people can stay with County Durham families near the areas they know."
Billy and Barbara Lister, of North View, Consett, County Durham, have three-grown-up daughters, but have looked after 25 children over the past 18 months.
Mr Lister, 52, who was formerly a lorry driver, said: "Some are very frightened when they first come here, but we try to create a homely atmosphere to make them feel welcome. Taking up fostering is one of the biggest changes I can imagine, but it has turned out to be very rewarding work. There is an awful lot of job satisfaction."
Carers can receive up to £480 a week in payments to help them look after young people.
Mrs Robinson said: "Caring and working with young people can be very challenging, but there are also great rewards in drawing on your own abilities to help a young person develop confidence in themselves and make plans for their future."
