A RECRUITMENT drive to hire lifeguards for North-East beaches has been launched.
Councillors agreed to reinstate the lifeguard service at Hartlepool and Seaton Carew last year following the death of an eight-year-old boy, who was swept away by a wave at Seaton Carew in August 2003.
Initially, seven lifeguards and two supervisors are needed to cover weekends, bank holidays and the half-term holidays at Seaton Carew, and also Block Sands and Fish Sands, at the Headland, north Hartlepool.
From July 16 to September 11, covering the school summer holidays, a total of 11 lifeguards and three supervisors are required.
Lifeguards will be paid £6.78 per hour and supervisors will receive £7.89.
Debbie Wood, Hartlepool Borough Council's beach safety officer, said: "To be a good lifeguard you need to be a good swimmer, alert and observant, and a good communicator who can be relied on in an emergency."
