Shrove Tuesday falls next week and preparations are now under way to celebrate in suitable style in one village.
A pancake evening will take place at St Mary's Priory Centre, Old Malton, between 7pm and 9pm. Traditional pancakes will be tossed, served hot with a squeeze of lemon and a dash of sugar or a dribble of syrup.
There will also be tea and coffee, a bring and buy sale, raffle, cake stall, a quiz and entertainment. However, after the day people will have to be ready to give their sweet-tooth a rest.
"It is tradition that on the eve of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, that people purged their larders and ate up all the luxury before the rigours of Lent," said the Canon of Old Malton, John Manchester.
Admission to the evening will be £1 for adults and 50p for children.
