A Spennymoor pensioner has been honoured for her services to the town and community with a citizenship award.
Madge Campbell was presented with a certificate of appreciation from Spennymoor Town Council by Mayor and Mayoress John and Davinia Culine following nominations from her neighbours.
The 84-year-old has lived in the town for most of her life and in more than five decades of voluntary work she has served on countless community groups and committees.
She worked in hotels in Richmond and Darlington, before serving on the National Savings Committee during the war.
She returned to her home town Spennymoor with late husband Frederick, a miner, where she ran a fruit and vegetable store and taught herself how to decorate cakes and make floral arrangements.
She worked for Save the Children, helped organise celebrations for the annual town gala and supported Spennymoor Settlement committee.
She was a governor of four schools and a town and borough councillor, serving as Mayor of Spennymoor in 1978.
She has been a Women's Institute member for 48 years, group convenor for 27 years and sat on the executive committee.
Mrs Campbell said: "I like doing things and helping people, sitting at home drives me mad."
