A RUGBY player is preparing for a march on York in full Roman gladiator costume to raise money for charity.
Front-row forward Stuart Simpson, from Richmondshire Rugby Club, hopes to complete the 50-mile route from Richmond in just 24 hours.
The money that he raises will be divided between Cancer Research UK and sports groups in the district, to assist them in improving sporting opportunities for young children.
Mr Simpson, 34, of Tunstall, near Richmond, aims to raise about £5,000 from the walk.
He said: "Sport isn't just for the talented few.
"Everybody can take part, even if they are just walking or swimming.
"With the rising obesity figures we all need to work together to get more children involved and hopefully this money will help."
The sports clubs that stand to benefit from the walk include Richmondshire Rugby Club, Richmond Hockey Club, Richmond Dales Swimming Club, Richmond Cricket Club and Richmond Town Football Club.
Mr Simpson will be joined for one section of the trip on Friday, March 25, by the mayor of Richmond, Mayor Russell Lord.
Mr Lord said: "I think it's a great thing that Stuart's doing.
"Sports clubs have a vital role to play in keeping the young people of Richmondshire fit and active."
Anybody who would like to sponsor Mr Simpson, or to join him on the march, is asked to contact him on (01748) 818327.
