A DATE has been set for Sir Bobby Robson to receive the honorary freedom of Newcastle.
The city council will confer the honour on the former Newcastle United and England manager at a ceremony in the civic centre on Wednesday, March 2, at 11am.
Newcastle's Lord Mayor, Councillor George Douglas, will award the honorary title to mark Sir Bobby's distinguished 55 years of service to football, as both a player and a manager across Europe.
The honour also acknowledges his ambassadorial role for Newcastle and the North-East, as well as his contribution to the culture and life of the city.
The County Durham-born pitman's son, brought up in the village of Langley Park, began his professional playing career with Fulham in 1950, and later appeared for West Bromwich Albion, before going on to earn England honours.
