ONE of the region's oldest charitable institutions yesterday handed over grants to dozens of community groups around the North-East.
Sherburn Hospital, on the outskirts of Durham City, was set up in the 12th Century to care for lepers. These days, it provides sheltered accommodation for about 90 people.
The hospital donates profits from its lands to charitable causes. Yesterday, its officials handed over £92,500 to 38 good causes, including nearly £5,800 to Chester West and Central Community Project, £4,000 to the Seaham Youth Initiative and £4,000 to Owton Manor West Neighbourhood Watch, Hartlepool.
It donated more than £340,000 last year.
