OLYMPIC swimmer Chris Cook praised children's achievements in the pool at an awards ceremony.
The North-East star was the guest at Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre to congratulate hundreds of young swim school members.
The children had all made an impression on the Amateur Swimming Association Kellogg's Frosties awards scheme.
Some swimmers have gone on to join Sedgefield Water Polo Club and become national junior champions.
Swimming development officer for Sedgefield Borough Council Sue Rogerson said: "We all recognise the importance in having a good technique from the early stages of learning to swim. The plan provides very detailed guidance on the progression steps required to gain each level, thus making swimming a more enjoyable experience for customers of any age."
Chris, who trains in Newcastle and represented Great Britain in Athens last year, said: "Swimming is not just a fantastic sport and a great way to stay fit and healthy, but it's also an essential life skill and it's essential that parents get their kids into lessons."
