A PHYSIOTHERAPIST at South Tees Hospitals NHS Trust has been selected by an independent charity to carry out research.
A £58,000 grant from the Health Foundation will enable Jane Cumming to take time out from her daily role to lead a project that will make a difference to the quality of patient care.
She wants to improve services for older people following leg amputation and will work with The University of Teesside Centre for Rehabilitation Science.
She said: "This will allow me to undertake research which could potentially be beneficial to patients on a local, national and international level.
"If we can identify the most appropriate rehabilitation model of care for this group of patients and influence success rates for users of artificial legs, then the findings could be used to inform clinical guidelines and provide a better service for patients."
By asking amputees their views and examining details of each patient's medical history, she aims to build a better picture of which people may benefit most from having an artificial leg.
