THE surroundings of Darlington's Arts Centre are to be enhanced as part of a £1.2m refurbishment project.
Work to revamp the Vane Terrace centre is due to start later this year, with a new auditorium, dressing rooms and improved access for disabled people.
But the land around the building is also to be improved, thanks to a £55,000 donation from a local organisation.
County Durham Environmental Trust has provided the funding to pay for the maintenance of existing trees, new shrubs, flowers and a sensory garden.
Trust chairman John Wearmouth said: "The Arts Centre and its grounds adjoining Stanhope Park are an important part of Darlington's heritage.
"Revitalising its landscape setting will bring pleasure to residents and visitors."
The refurbishment of the centre is expected to be completed in the summer of next year.
