A CAMPAIGN against domestic violence is being launched in North Yorkshire on Valentine's Day.

Hambleton Community Safety Partnership has picked the most romantic day of the year to highlight the hundreds of people each year who suffer at the hands of loved ones.

Last year in Hambleton, there were 355 reported incidents of domestic abuse - 120 more than in 2002.

Of those, 160 were repeat attacks and community safety officers believe there are many more who live with domestic violence, but do not report it.

Partnership domestic abuse co-ordinator Catherine McNaughton, said: "They accept this as a way of life and are often too afraid of the consequences to come forward and report it. We are here to help - no one should live in a home of fear.

"No one has the right to abuse another person, regardless of who they are - parent, partner or child.

"While most of us are enjoying an evening with our partners, take time to think of those who are suffering.

"And to those that are victims, remember there are people out there who are able to help - you do not have to put up with this behaviour."

The campaign is being launched at two roadshows next Monday.

The mobile police unit will be outside Northallerton Town Hall, from 10.30am to 12.30pm, and in Thirsk Market Place, from 1pm to 3pm.

The Domestic Violence Helpline is on 0808-200 0247 and the Family Help and Refuge can be reached by calling (01325) 364486.
