SIR PAUL McCARTNEY has hit out at his wife's critics for the first time, angrily rejecting claims that a horrific road accident benefited her career.

The accusations have been levelled at Heather Mills McCartney, who was born in Washington, Wearside, during the six years she has been with the former Beatle.

Sir Paul hit back in a message on his wife's official website.

He said he was appalled by claims that losing a leg in a motorbike accident in 1993 had helped her gain publicity.

He wrote: "Imagine losing a leg and dealing with it as bravely as Heather has done and having to read that on top of it.

"She was always reported to be clinging to me; the inference being that she was too possessive.

"Never mind the fact that I love her holding my arm, the truth is that a floor or pavement can be dangerous for an amputee to walk on, and a little help from a friend can sometimes be appreciated."

The pair are currently in the US, where they travelled to watch the Superbowl football final.
