THEY are usually seen cheering on the teams from the sidelines, but thanks to Comic Relief, team mascots have been under the spotlight.
Football mascots from across the region took to the pitch at the McCain Stadium, in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, for a hotly-contested pancake race.
Each had to flip pancakes while negotiating a six-hurdle course in an event sponsored by McCain. Sunderland's Samson the Cat won, with Scarborough's Chippy the Seagull as the runner-up.
Also taking part was Yorkie Lion, from York City.
McCain spokesman Jane White said: "It was a fantastic day and the enthusiasm from the football mascots was very impressive.
"They were committed and enjoyed every moment of their time on the pitch. It goes to show that they do have a serious side and are willing to help those less fortunate than themselves through Comic Relief."
