A MOTHER who found out she could have cancer at the same time she found she was pregnant will hear next week if she needs more treatment.

At 42, Dawn Golightly had two teenage daughters and was not trying for a baby when she discovered she was pregnant.

At the same time she found she was expecting, she was also told she might have cancer.

Ms Golightly, of East Boldon, South Tyneside, had been unwell for nearly three years before her diagnosis.

A combination of anxiety, depression, exhaustion and weight gain had prompted her to get a second opinion from an endocrinologist at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary, who discovered the pregnancy and possible cancer.

While doctors knew Ms Golightly was pregnant, they said they would not be certain whether she had cancer until they removed part of her thyroid, something they could not do until after she had the baby.

As soon as baby Olivia was born, Ms Golightly had the operation, and tests found the lump was cancerous.

Two operations followed, as well as radiation therapy, which meant she had to be insolation for two days at Newcastle General Hospital's Northern Centre for Cancer.

Next week she will have another check-up to find out if she needs more treatment.
