A design and print company is expecting to double its turnover after a three-year expansion programme.

Graphic designer Nick Waters set up Colourbox Design, in York, with his wife, Trish, in 1990, and worked with a design assistant until they decided to expand the business three years ago. The company now has a team of six, including four graphic designers.

The company, in Bishopthorpe Road, counts the University of York and the Tees, East and North Yorkshire Ambulance Service among its clients. It designs corporate logos, stationery, brochures and flyers, company reports, and display and exhibition material.

For advice on developing the business, Mr Waters contacted Business Link personal business advisor Bill Powrie, who he had met at a North Yorkshire business network event.

Mr Powrie said: "My colleague Graham Leake and I made a diagnosis of Colourbox Design and then worked alongside Nick and Trish to set out a vision for the company for the next three years to help clarify the direction of the business. This involved setting up a range of 'change projects' for the company to help achieve this vision.

"The key success factors we focused on were sales turnover, increased profitability and a structured development plan for staff incorporating Investors in People, which gave each of the team clearly defined roles within the company."

Mr Waters said it was thanks to advice from Business Link that turnover is likely to reach £500,000 by the end of this year.
