Children in Darlington have been learning about the pitfalls of smoking, drinking alcohol and sexual health issues.

Darlington Primary Care Trust's school nurses and its HIV prevention specialist spent the day with pupils at Hummersknott School and Language College as part of their activity week.

About 180 year nine pupils, aged 13 and 14, were involved in three 20 minutes sessions looking at the effects of smoking and alcohol. They also looked at contraception and sexually transmitted infections.

School nurse Jackie Watson said: "The students said the information they had received and the open discussion was of real benefit to them and they could have stayed longer in each workshop.

"Pupil participation was good and they appeared to enjoy the activities. We deliver health carousels to reinforce how important these messages are."
